How do I do in text citations in MLA format?

Answer

In text citations for MLA follow this format:

(Author page#)

ex:

(Harris 62)

This indicates that the material referenced in your paper came from page 62 of the source authored by Harris*

*There must always be a full citation in your works cited list correspond to your in text citations.

Other Scenarios:

  • If your source has 2 authors, include both.
    • Ex: (Harris and Smith 22)
  • If your source has 3 or more authors, include the first author followed by et. al.
    • Ex: (Harris, et. al. 55)
  • If your source has no listed author, use a shortened version of the article in quotes
    • Ex: ("Helping New Writers" 42)
  • If your source has no page numbers, simply omit them
    • Ex: (Harris)
