How do I cite a work from an anthology in MLA format?

Answer

*Work from an anthology: these are shorter pieces that are contained within a larger book (the anthology). Some common examples are essays published in a book about on a single topic, or a short story or poem from a published collection of works.

MLA citations for works from anthologies follow this format:

Author(s). "Title of Work." Title of Anthology, Editor, Edition, Publisher, Day Month Year, Location.

Example:

Harris, Muriel. "Talk to Me: Engaging Reluctant Writers." A Tutor's Guide: Helping Writers One to One, edited by Ben Rafoth, Heinemann, 2000, pp. 24-34.

  • The title of the shorter work (essays, chapters of a book, short stories, poems, etc.) will be "in quotes"
  • The title of the anthology will be in italics
  • Include the name of the editor(s) after the title of the book
  • The page range should note the pages covered by the shorter work
